WHY

Hello, I'm Dominic Silverthorn. Before I got addicted to primitive photography, I was arguably more useful — a craftsman and designer for many years, making furniture, interior spaces and unique wooden structures for clients in the UK and Japan.

My love of experimental photography led me to building wooden cameras and primitive lenses. When friends saw my Leica with a DIY lens, they jokingly called me a lens punk, and the name stuck.

That little lens got more attention than I expected. I started getting requests, so I began making and sending them to other artists and photographers around the globe. Through this, I've met and collaborated with some wonderful people, who in turn have inspired me to keep experimenting.

If you haven't already noticed, I also love wax crayons — this is how I draft and design most of my ideas. Not the most practical tool, but a lot of fun, like the cameras I build and use.

Which is really the whole point: I like to play between the lines of art, craft and photography — a blurred blend that coexists as one practice.
